PowerSmarter vs Other Quote Sites: What's Different?
In 2024 and 2025, two of Australia's best-known solar comparison platforms changed hands. SolarQuotes was acquired by Origin Energy in October 2024. SolarChoice was acquired by Flow Power in December 2025. Both were previously independent.
PowerSmarter remains independently owned. Here's what that means โ and why it matters for the quotes you receive.
The Ownership Problem in Solar Comparison
When a solar comparison platform is owned by an energy retailer or company with commercial interests in solar, structural conflicts exist:
- The platform may steer leads toward installers that are commercially convenient for the parent company
- Installer rankings may reflect commercial relationships rather than independent assessment
- The "independence" claim becomes difficult to verify when ownership is undisclosed
This doesn't mean every acquisition leads to bad outcomes for consumers โ but it does mean the question of independence is worth asking before trusting any platform with your home energy decision.
How PowerSmarter Works
PowerSmarter operates on a straightforward model:
- We earn a referral fee when a homeowner completes an installation through our installer network
- The fee comes from the installer, not from you as the homeowner
- We never accept fees from energy retailers or battery manufacturers to influence recommendations
- We vet installers independently โ checking SAA accreditation, reviews, licensing, and business standing
Installer Vetting Standards
Every installer in the PowerSmarter network is checked for:
- Current SAA (Solar Accreditation Australia) accreditation
- State electrical contractor licence validity
- Google/ProductReview rating threshold
- Business registration and ABN
- Complaint history review
We remove installers who receive multiple unresolved complaints, or whose accreditation lapses.
Quote Normalisation
One of the most common consumer complaints in solar and battery purchases: quotes are formatted differently, making comparison difficult. PowerSmarter's quote request process specifies a standard set of line items that each installer must include โ making side-by-side comparison more straightforward than comparing quotes you've gathered independently.
What to Check on Any Platform
Before using any solar or battery comparison site, ask:
- Who owns this platform? Check ASIC register or ownership disclosures
- How does it make money? (Lead selling vs referral vs retailer-funded)
- How are installers vetted? (Or are any SAA-accredited installer included?)
- Are quotes normalised to the same format?
Independent platforms that earn through referrals (paid by installers after successful jobs) have interests more aligned with homeowners than platforms paid by energy companies or retailers.
