PowerSmarter Success Stories: Real Homeowners, Real Savings
We talk a lot about numbers โ savings calculations, payback periods, rebate amounts. But what does it actually feel like to go through the process and come out the other side with a working battery system? Here are representative stories from PowerSmarter customers across Australia.
Jenny and Mark, Adelaide SA: The FiT Tipping Point

Jenny and Mark had 6 kW of solar installed in 2019. For the first few years, the 12-cent FiT from their retailer felt decent โ almost $800 annually from exports. By 2024, their retailer had dropped the FiT to 3 cents. Their quarterly electricity bill had barely budged despite having solar, and they were frustrated.
"We got quotes in early 2025 and waited for the CHBP to kick in," says Jenny. "Got the Sungrow SBR 9.6 installed in August 2025. Our quarterly bill dropped from $380 to around $55. We haven't paid more than $60 in a quarter since."
The CHBP rebate reduced their net battery cost to approximately $5,900. At $325 saved per quarter ($1,300/year), their payback period is around 4.5 years.
What made the difference: Waiting for CHBP was the right call for Jenny and Mark. The SA electricity rates (among Australia's highest) and the FiT decline made the battery case compelling, and the rebate made it financially obvious.
Raj, Northwest Sydney: From Sceptic to Convert
Raj is an engineer who spent six months building a detailed spreadsheet before committing to a battery. "I'm the kind of person who needed to see the numbers and validate the claims," he says. "I was sceptical about the savings estimates โ every installer was telling me different numbers."
He contacted PowerSmarter and received three quotes from vetted installers. "What I appreciated was that they all had to quote the same battery (Powerwall 3), and PowerSmarter helped me normalise on cost per usable kWh. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive was $2,100 for the same system."
Raj went with the second-cheapest quote after verifying the installer's SAA credentials and calling two of their references. "I chose them because the installer actually pulled up my 12-month interval data from my retailer portal and built the savings estimate from my actual usage, not a generic household assumption."
Six months in, his actual savings are tracking 8% above the installer's estimate. "The installer was conservative, which I liked. Better to be surprised positively than disappointed."
Sarah, Outer Melbourne: The State + Federal Stack

Sarah is a teacher and single parent who had solar but was intimidated by the complexity of comparing quotes and navigating rebates. "I didn't know what CHBP meant, I didn't know what VIC Solar Homes was, and I definitely didn't know you could stack them," she says.
Through PowerSmarter, she learned she qualified for both the federal CHBP and Victoria's Solar Homes battery rebate. "That knocked $7,272 off the price. My battery (Sungrow SBR 9.6 kWh) cost me $4,100 net after both rebates. I couldn't believe it."
Her quarterly electricity bill dropped from $340 to $85. "I was worried about the process being complicated, but the installer managed everything โ the rebate paperwork, the DNSP approval, the app setup. I just had to be home on installation day."
Key lesson: Many homeowners don't know both rebates are available and stackable. Getting help navigating this is part of the value of a good quote platform.
David and Lisa, Regional Queensland: The Backup Story
David and Lisa live outside Toowoomba. Their area experiences several multi-hour outages a year from storms. "We weren't primarily motivated by savings," says David. "We wanted to keep the lights on, the fridge running, and my wife's medical equipment operational during outages."
They installed a Powerwall 3 specifically for its whole-home backup capability and 11.5 kW continuous output. "It's gone through three outages since installation. We didn't notice any of them โ the switchover is instantaneous."
The savings have been a positive surprise. "We weren't expecting much financially โ we're on Energex, FiT isn't great. But between the CHBP and the savings on our bill, it's tracking to pay back in about 8 years. The backup value was worth it to us regardless, so the savings are a bonus."
The Common Thread
Across these stories, a few things consistently show up:
- The CHBP has been transformative for the financial case in most situations
- Installer quality and process management matters as much as hardware selection
- Real consumption data (not generic estimates) leads to realistic expectations and fewer disappointments
- The process is less complicated than most homeowners initially fear, when guided properly
The financial year ends June 30. If you're considering a battery, the CHBP program's current rebate structure means now is the right time to get the process started.
