How to Actually Claim the CHBP Battery Rebate (Step by Step)
The CHBP is designed to be relatively painless from the homeowner's perspective. Unlike some rebate schemes where you pay full price, lodge a claim, and wait three months for a cheque โ this one works as a point-of-sale discount. Your installer takes the rebate value off the invoice price, and then claims reimbursement from the government later.
That's the good news. The less-good news: there are still a few things you need to do, and doing them in the right order matters.
Here's how it works from start to finish.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Before anything else, make sure you actually qualify. Run through the key criteria:
- Household income under $180,000 combined
- Existing solar (grid-connected), or installing solar at the same time as the battery
- Owner-occupier (not a rental or investment property)
- Willing to use a CHBP-accredited installer
If you've got a "no" on any of these, the process stops here. Go check what state-level options might still apply to you.
Step 2: Get Multiple Quotes (Don't Skip This)
I'd suggest talking to at least two or three installers. Not because they'll all try to rip you off โ most won't โ but because prices genuinely vary, and the combination of battery brand, inverter compatibility, and installation complexity means there's real variation in what you'll be quoted.
When you contact installers, specifically ask:
- "Are you (or will you be) CHBP-accredited from 1 July?"
- "Can you show me the total price with and without the CHBP rebate applied?"
- "What battery models do you offer that qualify under the programme?"
Any installer who can't answer these questions clearly by June is probably not someone you want on your roof.
Step 3: Choose Your System and Sign a Contract
Once you've compared quotes and decided on an installer, you'll sign a contract. At this stage, the installer should clearly show the CHBP discount on the quote โ it gets applied as a reduction in the total price.
Make sure the contract explicitly mentions the CHBP rebate and what the net price is after it's applied. If the rebate isn't reflected in the quoted price (and they say they'll "sort it out later"), that's a red flag.
Also check: does the installation date fall on or after 1 July 2025? The programme isn't active before that date. Some unscrupulous operators might claim they can backdate or pre-process it โ they can't.

Step 4: Prepare Your Eligibility Documentation
The installer (or the programme administrator) will need to verify your eligibility. That typically means:
- A copy of your most recent tax return or Notice of Assessment showing household income
- Proof of property ownership (or occupancy agreement)
- Details of your existing solar system (installation date, capacity, etc.) if applicable
Get these documents together now, before July. It'll make the process faster and prevent delays.
Step 5: The Installation
Your accredited installer arranges the installation. They'll confirm the battery system meets CHBP technical requirements and handle the grid connection compliance.
You should receive:
- A Certificate of Electrical Compliance or Compliance Certificate (state-dependent)
- Documentation of the battery system installed
- Confirmation that the CHBP rebate has been applied and claimed by the installer
Step 6: Receive the Rebate (It's Already in Your Price)
Here's the thing people sometimes don't quite get: you won't receive a separate payment. The rebate is already baked into the price you paid. Your invoice will show the full system price, the CHBP rebate as a line-item discount, and the net amount you actually owe.
The installer then lodges a claim with the Clean Energy Regulator for reimbursement of the rebate amount. That process is between them and the government โ it doesn't affect you.
Keep a copy of your invoice showing the rebate was applied. You may need it for warranty claims, insurance purposes, or if there are any queries later.
A Quick Timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now (June) | Check eligibility, get quotes from 2-3 CHBP-accredited installers |
| Late June | Choose installer, sign contract, gather income documentation |
| 1 July 2025 | Programme opens โ installations can proceed |
| July onwards | Installation happens, rebate applied at point of sale |

It's genuinely not that complicated. The main thing is to do the legwork before 1 July rather than scrambling on the day.
