How to Choose a Solar Battery Installer in Australia

The battery gets all the attention. But the most important variable in your battery investment isn't the brand โ€” it's the person who installs it. A badly installed battery is a safety hazard, a warranty void, and potentially ineligible for your CHBP rebate.

Non-Negotiable #1: SAA Accreditation

How to Choose a Solar Battery Installer in Australia key facts

To access the CHBP rebate, your installer must be accredited through Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) at saaustralia.com.au. Search their name or business and verify their status is current before signing anything.

Note: CEC (Clean Energy Council) accreditation is separate. CEC maintains the CEC Approved Battery List (product quality). Your installer needs SAA accreditation for CHBP access.

Non-Negotiable #2: State Electrical Contractor Licence

On top of SAA, your installer needs a valid electrical contractor licence for your state. Verify it with the relevant state authority (Fair Trading NSW, Energy Safe Victoria, QBCC, etc.). An unlicensed electrician's work is potentially uninsured and non-compliant.

Battery-Specific Experience

Installing solar panels and installing a battery system are different skills. Ask specifically: "How many battery systems have you installed in the last 12 months?" A confident, experienced installer answers this readily.

What Good Quotes Look Like

A professional quote should include: gross price, CHBP rebate deducted (with calculation shown), net price, battery brand/model/kWh, inverter details, warranty terms, timeline, and what approvals are handled by the installer.

Red Flags: Walk Away From These

  • "Sign today and we'll apply the rebate" โ€” high-pressure sales
  • No physical business address or ABN
  • Can't provide or confirm SAA accreditation number
  • No written warranty documentation
  • Single brand pushed without explanation

The Three Quotes Rule

Get three quotes from three different SAA-accredited installers. Compare on scope, not just price. A $2,000 cheaper quote that excludes switchboard assessment and metering upgrade may end up more expensive total.
