How to Choose a Solar Installer: 10 Questions to Ask

Published 21 March 2026

Choosing the right solar installer is arguably more important than choosing the right panels. A poorly installed premium system will underperform a well-installed mid-range system every time. Here are the 10 questions you must ask before signing anything.

1. Are you CEC accredited?

The Clean Energy Council (CEC) accreditation is mandatory for installers to be able to create STCs. Ask for their accreditation number and verify it on the CEC website.

2. How long have you been in business?

Solar companies come and go. Look for at least 5 years of trading history. Check their ABN on the ASIC register to verify.

3. Can I see your workmanship warranty?

This is separate from the panel and inverter manufacturer warranties. Good installers offer 5-10 year workmanship warranties covering installation quality.

4. Will you do a site inspection before quoting?

Any quality installer should inspect your roof, switchboard, and electrical infrastructure before providing a final quote. Avoid companies that only quote from satellite imagery.

5. What inverter brands do you install?

The inverter is the brains of your system. Quality brands include Enphase, SolarEdge, Fronius, and Sungrow. Avoid unknown brands.

6. Do you use subcontractors?

Some companies farm out installations to subcontractors. If so, ensure the subcontractors are CEC accredited.

7. Can I speak to recent customers?

Reputable installers should be happy to provide references. Check Google Reviews and SolarQuotes reviews too.

8. What monitoring system is included?

Modern systems should include real-time monitoring via an app so you can track production and identify issues early.

9. What happens if something goes wrong?

Ask about their after-sales support process. How quickly do they respond? Do they have a local service team?

10. Is the quote fully itemised?

Your quote should clearly list all components (panels, inverter, racking, switchboard upgrades), labour, and any additional costs. Vague or bundled quotes are a red flag.
